Well, I may have jumped the gun. Blu-ray sales have surpassed HD-DVD for the first time as of last month. Do I worry that my assertion that HD was going win out is wrong? Not yet. I’m thinking it’s the new toy fetish from people getting PS3s for the holidays. If the numbers remain as they’re going by March, then I’ll be worried.

PLAYSTATION®3 HELPS FUEL MOMENTUM FOR BLU-RAY FORMAT
Blu-ray™ Disc Surpasses HD-DVD Cumulative Sales for the First Time
Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced that since the release of the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) computer entertainment system, with more than two million units shipped worldwide, Blu-ray™ Disc has experienced tremendous growth in consumer adoption.
According to Nielsen VideoScan, the consumer research firm for the VHS and DVD sell-through industry:
- Blu-ray has surpassed HD-DVD in cumulative sales
- Blu-ray titles outsold HD-DVD titles by more than a two-to-one margin during the first week of January (47.14 HD DVD titles for every 100 Blu-ray titles)
- Blu-ray titles outsold HD-DVD titles closer to three-to-one during the second week of the month (38.36 HD-DVD titles for every 100 Blu-ray titles)
According to SCEA customer survey data, 90 percent of current PS3 users have watched a Blu-ray movie on their PS3, 80 percent stated that they plan to purchase a Blu-ray movie and 72 percent stated that they plan to rent a Blu-ray movie in the near future.
Every PS3 system is equipped with a built-in Blu-ray Disc player giving users the ability to experience seamless animation and action sequences not seen in other gaming devices. Consumers can also use their PS3 as a Blu-ray Disc player to watch their favorite high-def movies in full 1080p resolution.
