Race Vs. Video Games

By Joe

Chris Kohler, over at Wired’s Game|Life, wrote a very good reflection on another piece on race and video game characters, using Jade from Beyond Good and Evil as it’s main point.

It’s an interesting article to read. And a good branching of a lot of the points Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics. What makes characters believable, and draws the audience into them, is the ambuguity of them. The less detail the characters have, the less they say, the more we can reinforce our own personalities on them.

In video games, removing race as well as many other characteristics make them more connectable. Jade, in this case, is claimed by many readers as being Black, or being Latino, or being Asian, rather than seeming to be such.

You all should read it. Go on, then come back here and leave comments of an educational nature…or something.
