Robotech to get the big screen treatment
As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, Toby Maguire has just made me a happy little geek.
Say what you will about the recent trend of Hollywood remakes of 80s cartoons, but I’m actually excited about some of them. In particular, the ideas of turning Robotech and Voltron into movies. Had they tried to do this back in the 80s or even the 90s, it would have looked silly. (See Robot Jox)
But now, WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY.
I just hope that a few things happen (or don’t happen):
They keep the screenplay serious and not cheesy. They did an alright job of this for the Transformers movie, considering the source material. But both Robotech and Voltron had much darker themes to them, and this needs to show in the screenplays.
They don’t mess up the story line. Robotech has one of those cool epic storylines that just shouldn’t be messed with to make it more “Hollywood.”

You know… I have problems with people touting the greatness of Robotech’s “story”…
Why?
Because Macross had a great story. And Mospeada had a great story. And Southern Cross had a great story. And none of them were related in ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM to each other. Yet some stupid Americans decided 22 years ago that they could make a single series out of it.
Robotech is already a patchwork series, there’s little they could do to make it further from the original story anyway.
You’re right. When I say that there was a great story, I mean that the Macross saga was awesome. Southern Cross was ok.
I’m probably unique in the fact that I never once watched the tv series. I read the books, which I guess were adaptations from the series?
I believe so… I never watched the series at all, so… *was only 3 when it came out*
