About

By Joe

The notion that the life of a geek is spent entirely within the bowels of the house, existing in a darkened pit only lit by the blue glow of a video monitor is insulting to say the least. While that may be the reality for me at the time of writing this, because outside of work, I’ve been spending my…ahem…copious spare time working on this, it is not true for the majority of us. We lead normal, productive lives. We have friends, experience love on several levels, go out and experience the delicacies that the modern world has to offer, and not merely through the virtual world. This is only one aspect.

Perhaps a better definition of a geek is one that has a compulsive need to be engulfed in a particular subject matter. Many people make their jobs their life. They are not considered geeks, but rather given nomenclatures such as “hard working,” “career minded,” or “fiscally motivated.” So are we. We have to eat and have a place to sleep just as much as the next person. But if our experiences lead us to a love, such as science, technology, games, etc., we’re classified as geeks and given almost untouchable status. Flavors of geekary are many and varied; music, movies, literature, drawing, painting, tv, graphic novels, drama, the list goes on. They enrich our lives and give expression and meaning to an otherwise mundane world.

Be free in your loves. That’s why we are here.

I’m Joe. I’m a geek.

And this is my crew…

Some of you may have asked “What’s the deal with the squirrel?” Yes, our friend the squirrel up there at the top of our page. For us, what we’re dealing with is the shadow of the squirrel, which is far more ninja-like than the rest of the squirrel. So, here’s our definition of squirrel.

Noun: Small land based mammal. (Ex: Hey look, a squirrel.)
Verb: To gain something of worth through stealth and cunning. (Ex: I squirreled us some free tickets to PAX.)
Adjective: An object or experience obtained through the use of cunning and stealth. (Ex: These squirreled nuts are tastier than usual.)
